Colonial VA 2023

Intro, Travel

Day 1

It’s time for another trip already! Just a few weeks after we got back from out west, we took another road trip, this time with some friends, the McKinneys. For those not familiar, Cody and Morgan graduated from the accounting program at App with me; Cody was my roommate in college; and Morgan was in a homeschool co-op with Faith many years back. Cody and I have been on several trips together in the past, and Morgan has also made an occasional appearance on the blog. They just recently had a baby, a girl named Elizabeth, who is 2.5 months older than Walker.

And yes, for those of you wondering, this trip involves more App football. This time, the Mountaineers play the Monarchs of Old Dominion in Norfolk, VA. We decided to make a long weekend out of it, exploring some of the historical sites around Virginia’s Chesapeake Bay area.

Posts for this trip will be a little more concise than our western trip, because I didn’t take photos with my cameras, instead relying on my phone for pictures.

Barbecue

After I got off work on Thursday, we left Boone and started our drive east. We’d decided to convene in Greensboro and carpool from there. We met at the original Stamey’s Barbecue for dinner – I figured this would be pretty quick, but we managed to get an extremely slow server. Nonetheless, it was a delicious meal. Stamey’s now roasts their own coffee too, so I got a cup for the road.

Driving // Arriving

Getting to the Williamsburg area is a pretty easy drive up I-85 and I-95, but it takes a long time, especially since you have to backtrack down and around the James River. We only stopped once (at a Sheetz in Chester, VA for some petrol), and finally arrived at our Airbnb in Yorktown after midnight. We quickly settled in and headed to bed. Our lodging was in a great location, right on the York River with a view of the Coleman Memorial Bridge to our right, and the Naval Weapons Station to our left.

One Response

  1. Correction: you and Faith quickly settled and headed to bed. Morgan and I stayed awake for an hour and a half while Lizzie unleashed all the built up energy from the car ride. She did eventually tire out and we all slept peacefully. Looking forward to part 2!
